thanks for your work. Your php is a huge mess, and I wonder why you use simplepie at all... It is so much more powerful than what you are doing with it. This one-liner will save you not only code, but also LOTS of processing power on the server side:
$pic = $item->get_enclosure()->get_thumbnail();
it returns something like:
(by the way, the /s36-c/ (s=size, 36=pixel, -c=square) in the picasa bit here can be switched to anything you like and google-servers take care of the rendering...
for example I use /s720/ as my default for showing the normal size image, but have had success at /s1280/
